In a brief battle the Macedonians defeated Darius the Third who fled with the Persian army (, 2014).

At the Granicus River in 334 BC, Alexander met the forces of Darius III, the Great King of Persia. Even before Alexander visited the city of Gordion, the Macedonian encountered Persian resistance to his invasion. Throughout the conquest of the Persian Empire, Alexander and his army fought three major battles. Plutarch documents this in The Life of Alexander: Spurred by Philip’s ambition, Alexander displayed an interest in the Persians, interrogating some of the visiting Persian ambassadors during his father's reign from a young age. With the Macedonian throne, Alexander also inherited the role as leader of the Corinthian League, and with it their war on Persia, declared by Philip II in 337 BC (Kenworthy, G., 1997). Among Alexander’s greatest achievements is his conquest of the vast Persian Empire.
